We lost Orlando Unexpectedly at the Age of 43

Orlando Lino Garrido of New River, Arizona, died unexpectedly at the age of 43, on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. Orlando was born on September 23, 1964, in Saint Joseph, Missouri to Orlando Luis Garrido & his wife, Lillie (Becerril). He grew up in Huntington Beach, California and graduated from Marina High School – Class of ‘82. At that time, Orlando followed his passion for horses and began what would be a successful career in horse racing for over 14 years as a jockey celebrating his first of many wins at Longacres, Washington on “Judge Me Not”. After retiring from racing and up until his death, he worked with Jorge Estrada II in several business ventures. Jorge was also a retired jockey, lifetime friend, and “brother”. Orlando maintained his love of horses by playing polo with Jorge on their team, Polo Azteca with the North Scottsdale Polo Club, to which he held the position as Club Manager. One of his greatest accomplishments included raising his son, Orly,11. He is also survived by his parents, his older sister Teresa (Garrido) and her husband Luis Santos, their children, Luis O., Nicole, Sam, and Joel; his younger sister, Lillie (Garrido) & her husband Rey Butcher, their children, Max, Ben, and Sam. Orlando was loved by many aunts, uncles, and cousins from California, Texas, Florida, and Cuba. He is preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents. Orlando was a good son, a dedicated father, the best brother two sisters could ever have wanted and a loyal friend. He celebrated life each and every day. He was a positive influence on those around him. His beautiful smile, sharp sense of humor, and kindness will be forever in our hearts.

Dear Lillie,

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your brother, Orlando. I knew Orlando and interacted with him regarding polo, particularly about the North Scottdale Polo Club, and am very shocked & saddened by his passing.

In recognition of the high regard that all of us in the Arizona horse community have for him, I would like permission to include a small memorial to Orlando at the end of the 2008 edition of the Arizona Equine Resource Guide that we're publishing in February. The annual horse directory is a service to the Arizona horse clubs & associations & is given away to their members, and so I feel that it would be an appropriate place to pay tribute to his memory along with a couple of photos. Mickey has given me permission to include her photos.

We are wrapping up the proofs today & tomorrow, so my apology that this is time-sensitive. I'll be happy to send you a proof of copy to review prior to publication by e-mail, and a copy of the book by mail when it is done. Please e-mail me at Cathleen@EquineResourceGuide.com, so that I will have an e-mail address to send the proof to right away, and also to answer any questions that you may have. I hope that it will be both an appropriate and comforting memorial for you.

Kind regards, Cathleen

The photo's Michelle took of Orlando playing polo are absolutely stunning! Beautifully done Mickey. Why aren't you working at the racetrack doing their photos? Your work is just so awesome. You've done Orlando proud. I'm sure he's looking down with that brilliant smile of his!

Thanks for the Memories,
Diamond Jim Brooks & Laura J Hearn

Back in 1991 I got my apprentice license and left Santa Anita to go ride the fair curcuit.I didn't know anybody.I meet Orlando and he introduced me to the horsemen, got me an agent and helped me make money. He let me stay with him, taught me about nutrition and exercise and always made sure that I had money so that I could eat.He watched my races and told me what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. He helped me a great deal and I've never forgotten that.He didn't have to do all of that.He did it out of the goodness in his heart.I am sorry to hear of his passing. He made an impression on my life that I will never forget...Mike Ardis
